Winter meetings & update

With the winter meetings over, some player movement will affect rosters for setting keepers or planning for the draft. Javier Vazquez was dealt to the NL as was JJ Putz. Raul Ibanez left the AL for the World Champion Phillies. Ramon Hernandez was dealt to the Reds. If you had these players, please adust your rosters accordingly.

CC Sabathia came back to the AL and is eligible for our draft. Kerry Wood also will be coming to the AL and will also be elgible for our draft.

Some other players to keep an eye on to see if they switch leagues are:

Mark Teixiera (leaving AL?)
Bobby Abreu (leaving AL?)
Derek Lowe (back to AL?)
Manny Ramirez (back to AL?)
Rafael Furcal (AL first timer?)

Remember- there is no compensation in the off-season, but you have your whole 24 man roster available to you before keepers are due on Feb 17th.

Finally, as Laddie pointed out to me- how come there were 13 votes with only 12 teams in our league for the IP/CG stat switch? The final vote was 8-5 in favor of adding IP to replace CG. I don't have an answer. Maybe someone voted twice. Maybe someone stumbled on to the site while surfing the internet and voted. I have not heard an uproar from anyone, so we will let the stat change stand. If enough of you feel it is an issue, we can vote on the Yahoo site in the spring, just let me know.

Thanks,

Stat Change for 2009

Innings Pitched will replace the Complete Games stat for the 2009 season. Everyone voted but ye ol commish, so thanks for staying active. The final vote was 8-5 in favor of adding IP. Please be sure you take this into account when you start to evaluate pitchers to draft or keep.

The Winter meetings are next week and hopefully we will see guys like Manny Ramirez, CC Sabathia, Derek Lowe, Brian Fuentes, and Ben Sheets return or join the American League so they are elgible for our draft.

If any trades happen, I will post about them here. Hope you all have a great holiday season.

Matt Holliday trade

Matt Holliday has been traded to the Oakland A's thus making him available in our 2009 draft. Clientele loses Carlos Gonzalez off his minor league roster while Whurlitzer loses Greg Smith off his roster and Blue Ballers loses Huston Street off his roster.

There is no compensation in the off-season (there is no way Holliday is worth Street or Smith straight up even of there was), so Ballers and Whurlitzer will not get Holliday, and as we voted last month, there is no compensation for losing a minor league player. We agreed to not name keepers until the dust had settled on the free agent and trade market, which should be at the start of spring training.

Keepers, both majors and minors, are due to me by Feb 17. If you need to see your rosters, please click on the archives on the blog, they should be in the October section.

Minor League Rules

Minor League Rules

Minors draft is held after the Majors draft. It is held on the league page on the message board. Each owner has 24 hours to make a selection. Draft order is determined on the strength of minor league system. Currently players are evaluated according to Rotoworld’s Top 150 prospect list that comes out in early March.

5 points – Top 10 prospect or MLB player/non-rookie
4 points – Top 11-25 prospect
3 points – Top 26-50 prospect
2 points – Top 51- 100 prospect
1 point – Top 100- 150 prospect
0 points- Not on list/ empty roster spot

The teams graded with lowest score get the highest draft pick. Draft order is then determined. Teams draft until all rosters are full with 6 players, or owner opts out.

Once a minor league player is called up to major league roster he cannot be “sent down”. He is considered a member of that teams MLB roster and falls under the keeper rules of the 24-man roster.

An owner can call up a minor league player at any time and does not have to post a “bidding fee” for the minor league player.

Each owner may carry up to six minor league players or fewer in a season.

Minor league players may be traded and minor league draft picks may be traded.

Minor league rosters are frozen at the same time keepers are due to the league office. Players may be called up from a minors roster after the MLB draft. If they have accumulated 150 ABs or 45 IP they must be called up, or waived. This prevents players from stashing players on the minors rosters.

EXAMPLE: Blue Ballers has Ben Zobrist and John Rhienecker on his minors roster. Zobrist has over 150 ABs and Rhienecker has over 45 IP. During or immediately after the completion of the MLB draft, Ballers may either call up these players to his 24 man roster, or he loses them into the FA pool, meaning that any team may bid on them in week #1’s bid process.

Compensation

Compensation

Because Kelly Leak is an AL-only league, at times during the season, a player may be traded from the AL to the NL. In this event, the team with the player being traded has the option of taking the traded player. If a player is traded for minor league players, the owner may take those minor league players, given he has roster room for them.

EXAMPLE 1: Team A has Ed Whitson on his team. Whitson is dealt to the NL for Dave Parker. Team A can then take Parker with no bidding fee, if he wants.

The exception is that if it is a grossly unbalanced trade, the compensation may be overruled. For example, Cory Lidle was dealt from the AL to the NL in a salary dump involving Bob Abreu. Lidle is nowhere near the worth of Abreu. Lidle’s owner was offered a free waiver move later, but Abreu was open to all teams to bid on. In this circumstance, the league members discussed the options and decided what was in the best interest and integrity of the league and then voted on it.

EXAMPLE 2: Team B has Bump Willis. Willis is dealt to the NL for 3 minor leaguers. Team B may take ONE of those three minor leaguers, if he has roster space. Team B can drop one of his minor leaguers to make roster space if so desired.

NO Compensation is awarded if a minor leaguer is traded. There are several reasons for this. First and foremost, it allows new players into the league whom other teams may bid on, increasing the end-of-year pot of money. Second of all, prospects are still prospects, the debate of their value and if they will pan out is never ending. A team getting an MVP-type player for an unknown, questionable prospect in a fantasy league that uses a limited player pool affects the integrity of the league. Compensation is a pain in the ass, and has some inconsistencies. The less we can do, the better

Waivers/ Bids

Waivers/ Bidding

There is no waiver rule in the Kelly Leak All- Star League. If an owner wants to add a player out of the free agent pool, a “bid” is sent via e-mail to the league commissioner. Bids must be in 25-cent increments and the minimum low bid is $1. All bids must be sent be received by the commissioner by 8:00 PM PST/ 11:00 PM EST on each Thursday of the week. The team with the highest bid wins that player for the week. A running tabulation is kept through the Yahoo League page. All owners are encouraged to settle their balances by the ASB, Labor Day, and the end of the season via Paypal.

EXAMPLE: Team A sends an e-mail (through the league e-mail or personal e-mail) stating “I bid $2.50 for Al Nipper. I have an open roster spot”. Team B may also send an e-mail stating “ I bid $5.00 for Al Nipper. If I get him, please drop Sammy Stewart”. In this scenario, Team B would have won the rights to claim Nipper. $5 would be added to Team B’s ledger.

The commissioner will add the player to each team’s roster. In the event that he cannot add the player, (rosters may be full, player may not be DLed yet) an owner has one week to make the roster move himself. Teams are not allowed to make roster moves to “block” other teams from making a move.

In the event that two teams make the same bid for a player, those two teams will have 24 hours to re-bid against one another for that player’s services.

Commissioner bids need to be in to a player not bidding that week, by Wednesday, a day before other teams bids are due.

Players are encouraged to put “bid” in the re: part of the e-mail so they are not opened before Thursday.
